Invoking the Light of Solstice

Updated: Jun 21

During this time of year in the northern hemisphere, we celebrate the light of summer solstice. It is a time to relish the longer days filled with warm light and positive expectations. It is the time to plant our seeds, even metaphorically speaking, planting our dreams and goals with the knowledge of its harvest not far behind.

This is a powerful time of year to make intentions, start new projects, make resolutions, creating plans to grow in new and exciting ways. This time of year marks the moment when we are in perfect alignment with the great celestial balance. Solstice represents a time to claim that inner balance within ourselves, making connections that we want to gather in harvest as an abundant future.

We have many opportunities to set intentions, but few moments within the year line-up to make those intentions extra-powerful by aligning them with a planetary event. The solstice represented a key moment for the ancients and our ancestors, making it a remarkable link between us and them. We can honor our ancestral links, joining the celebration of our cosmic alignment with the universe.

We have the chance to reconnect to our ancient lineages by making an effort to mark the passing of time across the sky as we stand on this same planet, feeling the warmth of the sun in the same way. It was traditionally a moment to receive blessings, protections and to gather power to prevail towards goals. The solstice celebrates the brightness of our world in perfect balance and celestial harmony.

From ancient sites, we can determined that honoring the celestial time was essential for celebrating solstice. For many of us, we may not be able to travel to a sacred site to pay homage and mark the movement of the sun. However, we can turn our own part of the world into a sacred site for ourselves by creating an altar, or rising before sunrise to meet the Goddess as she ascends to the heavens.

Each moment of the day can become a special celebration of the perfect summer day honoring the sunshine that sets everything aglow. Another option to invoke the light of Solstice is to place a placard on the altar that states the five goals or ten blessings received as a form of affirmation.

We can plant a tree, scrub or adopt a plant for inside that becomes a symbolic reminder of our solstice intentions. Every time we water our plant, we nature our hopes and dreams by affirming them. We can inspire ourselves seeing the growth of the plant as a symbolic representation of our dreams growing and taking form. This can be especially powerful when choosing to work with fruit or flowering plants that bring an actual harvest.

We can also perform a sun energizing ritual during solstice, as follows to promote empowerment, increased energy and healing thoughts. Facing the sun with eyes closed, feel the warmth of the sun filling up every cell in the body with health, taking a deep breathes. While we are absorbing the warmth of the sun, remember that this is the physical representation of divine light surrounding you with blessings.

We can hold this perfect balance between heaven and earth, time and space, as a celebration of abundant offerings. As we focus on gratitude, planting our intentions, affirming our claim to an abundant harvest, it connects us to the echoed prayers of the past. Maybe our ancestors, or a different tribe, but the same practice of honoring our gifts from the earth and receiving blessings connects us.
